My Weight Loss Story
Want tips on health and weight management?
I am 5 feet and 2 inches tall. About 4 years ago, I weighed over 90 kilograms. Today, as I write this, I weigh 63 kilograms .
My determination to lose weight began in a most hilarious way. A colleague of mine at the time had traveled for an official assignment in The Hague, which is the same city my parents live in the Netherlands, and he got to see them. On his return to Nigeria, he offered to help my mom deliver some things to me. They were clothes – some for my husband and baby, but a lot for me. Lovely, beautiful gowns. I was so excited and grateful; and then I began to try them on – one after the other. And they did not fit. Not a single one fit properly. Most were too tight, some would not even zip at all. That got me very concerned.
I had always been an overweight, and then, obese girl, and I loved myself and my size. But at this time, I had gotten a lot bigger, way past the UK 12 I used to wear, and also beyond the US 12 that I had subtly grown into. At this time, I was conveniently putting on a US 14 and sometimes a US 16.
The realization made me a little sad and I said to my husband that night – “I promise you, I’d lose 5 kgs by the end of December.” This was in October 2018.
Mind you, I had signed up and actually began attending gym by April 2018. But I did not lose weight. In fact, there were times between April and October that I gained weight. But on this night of October 2nd I was very determined; I told myself I could do it.
The very next day, I began taking vital steps that would eventually change my weight permanently, change my relationship with food and health, change my mindset and set me on a journey to helping other people.
Why Did I Start This Section of the Website?
One: I decided to start this page because after I lost considerable amount of weight, people became curious, they wanted to know how I did it and how they could replicate the same methods for themselves. And usually, they wanted a quick fix – a one-word or one-sentence response that would fix all of their weight problems. As much as I always want to help, I do not have a one-word response to fixing weight loss. These past years have been a learning, growing process for me and most importantly, has become a lifestyle. My methods and approach to weight loss were personally developed. I did not follow any marketed dieting program or method, neither did I drink any substance that claims to help people lose weight. So, I do not have an easy answer to give to anyone. I have sooo many “ways I did it” and a plain WhatApp chat won’t cover it all. I will like to use this page to share tips, recipes, and simple things I do every day that helped me lose and help me maintain my weight. I am hoping that you can apply these tips as well.
Two: Sometime in 2019, I received a leading from the LORD to write about my weight loss journey to help people. I was immediately pumped up to do it. But not long after I got pregnant for my second daughter. I knew getting pregnant will cause me to gain weight again (which I did). So, I told myself, “After I deliver, I will follow the same approach to try to lose weight again, and if it works for the second time, then I’ll know I have a story worth sharing.” After I delivered my second baby in May 2020, I weighed 84kgs. By November 2020, I was weighing 67 kgs. I had lost all but 2 kgs of the pregnancy weight. Again, without drinking any weight loss tea or following any restricted weight loss regimen.
At this point, I knew I had a story; but fear and doubts kicked in – “Why will people read from me? There are people with better, more proven, scientific methods out there. I don’t have the qualifications, etc.” and so I stalled on it.
But the Holy Spirit wouldn’t let me rest on it. So, one day I asked God, “Why this? Why food? Why are you so bothered about what people eat?” And God in His love and mercy responded so clearly, “Because if people eat healthy, then they can have healthy lives and live longer to fulfill the purpose for which I have made them.”
It struck me. It wasn’t about money or about proving something. It was ministry. This got me up and so I’m writing.
I do hope you can see and treat your bodies like God’s vessels for purpose that it is, and I hope that I’ll be able to help you on your journey to healthier and more fulfilling lives. Please check back often for new tips, recipes and videos.
